Design is my everyday. From the moment I get up in the morning, stand in the shower, grab the striped shampoo bottle. Put on tights, iron a dress, hurry down to the kitchen and pour whole milk into the bowl and tea in my cup. I sit in the chair and read the newspaper on my ipad. Now, I have already been in direct design contact seven times. Then, I transfer money on mobilpay to my friend for dinner yesterday, put on outerwear, check the time, unlock bike and hurry down to the station, on the road I get a text that the train is delayed. That was probably five more contact with design. Enter the train, take out the computer, respond to emails and adjust today’s presentation one last time. I can keep on like this. Design is an integral part of my and our everyday lives in Denmark, where we are constantly in contact with design solutions, systems and products designed to enhance our well-being and productivity – aesthetically as well as functionally.

Design is a way of thinking based on people’s needs, dreams for the future and the concrete contexts that the design solution should work in. Design finds the balance precisely between form and function, challenges our thinking and brings together all the elements to a concrete solution, that appeals to our sensory devices. It may take the form of a service, an interaction, a system, a collection or a product, but it’s not essential. Essentially, design by virtue of its thoroughness and artistic grip becomes the preferred choice of users because it contains both functional and aesthetic value.

Design is my subject and my language. It is the design style of the time that puts the latest knowledge of materials, technology and interaction into play with the notion of present and future needs, which emerges in concrete and sensible solutions, systems and products for the benefit of people and society. We always need designers who can develop the strong concepts of the time and give the concepts a concrete, sensual and functional form by uniting the hand and the voice of the spirit – thus giving our time a clear aesthetic expression.

Danish design is democratic and for all forms follows function and we have a strong tradition of developing design in close interaction with the users. It has been this approach that has established Danish design as an attractive and sought after product on the global market – because it is not just about exporting a product but about export of welfare, of democracy – of Denmark.

We are in the midst of a rapid development – technologically, demographically and resource-and it calls for design that, in its nature, strives for renewal and improvement, which can show new and better ways for living together in the future society, creating growth while protecting our culture, nature and resources. Good design is precisely the challenge of the day and develops new concrete strategies, products and solutions that can help us act smarter and live more sustainably.

Making Matters – Design is the future. The design profession is about to see what power and influence the discipline has. Not always alone, but with other professional groups and in close dialogue with future users. Design creates relationships between people and subjects, collects knowledge, challenges our thinking, works in open processes where scenarios and prototypes make it possible to be in dialogue with stakeholders and adjust the results along the way. Design is the artist’s artistic voice in our everyday lives. We need it for a while, especially in the future because we do not know it yet.
