My name is
Anders Thulin.
For me, design is

a universal language —

Head of the Institute for Visual Design, The Royal Academy

2023

We experience and understand the world through what we see. The visual speaks to us as a boundless, universal language that shapes us and affects our identity. With the awareness that everything communicates, visual design takes on a special significance as a mediator of the existing and as a visualization of that which does not yet exist.

I am committed to creating coherent and integrated design solutions that connect people and link us with the technology we surround ourselves with in a meaningful way. I find that as designers, we are increasingly taking on a central role in society by identifying, solving, and communicating the need for societal and sustainable changes.

I am focused on challenging conventions and embracing a diverse approach to design – from the analog to the digital, from the artistic to the technological, from the specific to the speculative. I see design as a superpower that has the ability to shape the future and change the world for the better.

In Denmark, design is rooted in our common values and craft tradition. The rapidly growing technological development challenges us as a design nation. It is important that we maintain our artistic, formative approach to the design field, while incorporating new technologies into our practice and ensuring that form and function go hand in hand with necessity.
